Why are South African wines so good ?

South African wines have a history dating back to 1659, with the first bottle produced in Cape Town by its founder Jan van Riebeeck. Over the last 30 years, with increased investment in South African Wine, the country has found itself consistently in the top 15 wine producing countries in the world.

South Africa’s location at the tip of the African continent means it experiences what is classed as a Mediterranean-style climate and as such is ideal for wine production. A multitude of mixed micro climates, such as areas in rain shadows of mountains, or coastal regions that are subject to a cooler breeze, means that the wine regions of the Cape produce a vast variety of grapes including the country’s signature variety of Pinotage. Chenin Blanc, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are also prevalent.

As with most countries, South Africa has a system that determines how wines are described on their labels. The system is called “Wine of Origin” and means that all wines are clearly labeled as to which region they come from. Some of the most notable regions to keep an eye out for are Constantia, Paarl, Frankschhoek Valley, Overberg, Breede River Valley and Stellenbosch.

Stellenbosch is the second oldest wine region in the country and alone is responsible for almost 14% of the country’s annual wine production. Most famed for the reds, the region also produces some stunning and unique whites in particular its Sauvignon blanc and Chardonnay.

One of our favourite wineries in the Stellenbosch region is the family run Zevenwacht Estate, who have been producing quality wines for over 300 years. Zevenwacht – derived from the Dutch “Seven Expectations”, have a simple wine philosophy in that they believe quality begins in the vineyard and as such, produce some of the region’s best wine crops.

We stock a wide array of Zevenwacht wines at the Lodge South African, and summertime is a great time to try out some medium bodied, dry and fruity wines. Here’s a few of our recommendations:

Zevenwacht 7even Sauvignon Blanc. – Ideal with fresh summer foods and salads.
A fresh and fruity style Sauvignon Blanc, bursting with tropical fruit aromas of guava, grapefruit and kiwi fruit. The wine has a juicy acidity on the palate with crisp finish.

The Z Collection Sauvignon Blanc. – Great with Seafood.
The nose shows concentrated aromas of nettles, crushed fig and passion fruit, with hints of grapefruit that continues on to the palate. The generous mouth feel is supported with a fine natural lime acidity that gives the wine length and focus. Previous vintages confirm that this wine ages beautifully and develops more complexity over time as flavours subtly change.

Zevenwacht 7even Rosé – Perfect with light lunches
Beautiful salmon pink in colour, the wine has upfront fruit of cranberry and strawberries with hints of rose petals. The palate is juicy with succulent red fruit and fresh acidity. A delicious lifestyle wine, elegant and soft.
